(Onus of Funding State Mandates Falls on Counties) Minnesota will lose about 72 full-time public defender positions due to deep cuts by the state. The State Board of Public Defense will stop representing parents in child protection and parental rights termination cases. That means that counties will have to pay. Stevens County Director of Human Resources Joanie Murphy says "We have to provide a certain level of service and we tap every outside funding resource we can, after that we have to look to local levies to shore up the necessary funds to perform the mandated services". Human Service programs didn't make it onto the list of the exemptions for the 3.9% new levy limits imposed by Governor Pawlenty.

(Blood drive) The Red Cross Blood mobile will make a swing through Milan today. Blood donation opportunities are available at Kviteseid Lutheran Church on Summit Ave. in Milan from 8 a.m. to 12 noon.

(Firework's Law Change) 2008 brings in a minor change to fireworks laws in Minnesota. The legal limit of chemical mixture in fireworks for Minnesota has gone from 200 grams of firepower to 500 grams, in non-aerial and non-explosive fireworks. Pope County Sheriff Tom Larson said basically that means it is now legal to use fireworks that spray and crackle sparks like fountains, he cautions that you shouldn't try to hold these fireworks while they are active. Larson said that it is still against the law to use fireworks that are considered aerial or explosive like bottle rockets, firecrackers, roman candles and fireworks shot from a tube.

(Hancock Fun) A Friday Fourth of July starts the weekend early so Hancock starts their gala extravaganza, celebrating Families tonight. D.J. Kim Wolf will host Karaoke from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. at Inn Like Flynns tonight. After dancing all night you'll have about 6 hours to sleep before you wake up for the Lions 5K run or walk, beginning at 7:30 at Page Lake. After 5 kilometers of exercise you'll have earned you butter and syrup for the Firemen Pancake breakfast at the Community Center beginning at 7:00 a.m.
