MORRIS – Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta outscored conference opponents 142-21, going 13-1 and claimed their fifth straight West Central Conference championship.

It took the Tigers until the final day of the regular season last year to claim the title, this year though it was clear early on that they were the team to beat, winning their first 11 conference games before Thursday’s 3-2 loss to Melrose. ACGC was the only team close to the Tigers, three games back at 10-4.

They did so with a balanced attack at the plate, a lineup that has a collective .387 batting average and features five players who hit above .400. Liz Dietz has taken care of the pitching, going 13-2 with a 1.67 ERA over 90.2 innings, striking out 77 and walking just 24. She has had the benefit of a solid defense behind her, as the Tigers have a .958 fielding percentage.

The Tigers went 4-1 against non-conference opponents and will carry a 17-2 record into the section playoffs which are set to begin on Tuesday.

They have earned the no. 1 seed in the north sub-section and receive a first-round bye, and will host the winner of the Minnewaska versus Benson matchup from Eagles Park. The Lakers and Braves are set for a 4:00 first pitch, with the Tigers game to follow.

ACGC grabbed the no. 2 seed and will host New London-Spicer in Grove City on Tuesday. The winner will then face whoever emerges from the Montevideo versus third-seed Minneota-Canby game.

Pipestone and Luverne are the top two seeds in the south sub-section. Following Tuesday’s slate of games, the remaining team will head to Marshall on Saturday, May 26th.
