Saints Sweep Cougars In UMAC Softball Doubleheader 11 Apr 18

MORRIS, Minn. – After a series of postponements and cancellations, the Minnesota Morris softball team played in front of the home crowd Wednesday for the first time in 2018 when they entertained St. Scholastica at Big Cat Stadium for a UMAC doubleheader. The Cougars plated 12 runs, but dropped both contests by scores of 16-8 and 11-4.

Game 1: CSS 16, UMM 8 (6 inn.)
The Cougars held an 8-7 lead after five innings, but the Saints erupted for nine runs in the sixth to put an early end to the contest. UMM scored two runs in both the second and fourth innings to take a 4-2 lead. After CSS scored five in the fifth to take a 3-run lead, the Cougars countered with four to reclaim the edge. Lacey Sullivan started the spurt with a double to left. Later, with the bases loaded, Autumn Mahoney cleared the bases with a double to left. She scored the go-ahead run on an RBI groundout. Mahoney was a perfect 3-for-3 in the opener with two RBI and three runs scored. Emily Nordquist went 2-for-4. Lydia Mann and Clare Hamer each collected doubles.

Game 2: CSS 11, UMM 4
St. Scholastica scored in six of the seven innings to help claim the doubleheader sweep. After CSS scored one in the top of the first, the Cougars countered with a run in their half. Megan Knickerbocker led things off with a double to center. She advanced to third on a groundout then scored on a bunt single from Sullivan. Knickerbocker led off the third with another base hit, a single to center. Nordquist followed with a single. Knickerbocker would later score her second run on a wild pitch. UMM plated two more in the fourth. Knickerbocker delivered again driving in two with a double to left. She went 3-for-4 in the nightcap.

Minnesota Morris (6-20, 0-6 in UMAC) hosts North Central tomorrow at Big Cat Stadium at 2 p.m.
