MOORHEAD – The Hancock Owls will play for the section 6A championship after earning a 61-54 win over Ortonville in the 6A-South title game on Monday night at Memorial Auditorium on the Concordia College campus in Moorhead.

The Owls raced out to a 21-6 lead before the Trojans answered with an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to five. Hancock finished the first half strong to take a 29-22 lead into halftime, holding the Trojans to 29 percent shooting.

Ortonville regrouped and came out of the break by hitting 9 of 15 shots to grab their first lead of the game at 40-38. The Owls quickly tied the game and the lead changed hands three times over the next 90 seconds and remained close until the final minutes.

With Hancock back on top 54-51 with 1:40 to go, the Owls were able to grow the lead at the foul line, gaining a 59-53 advantage in the final minute when Tyson Powell was fouled on a three-point attempt with 12 seconds left.

Powell hit one-of-three at the line, and off the rebound the Owls launched a long pass down the floor to Daniel Milander who layed in the game-clinching bucket.

Noah Kannegiesser scored 36 points with seven assists and five steals, Peyton Rohloff had six points and nine rebounds, Bennett Nienhaus added nine points and seven rebounds and the Owls improve to 25-2 on the season.

The Trojans got 15 points from Powell, DaVonte Edwards scored 12 with 15 rebounds, Nate Treinen and Caden Wellnitz each had 10 but Ortonville managed to go just 1-17 from three-point range, and their season ends with a 20-7 record.
