Prep Results: Storm Take Third Place At Holiday Classic Behind Bruns’ Four Goals 29 Dec 17

MORRIS – Zach Bruns scored four goals including a third period hat trick to help Morris/Benson Area pull away from Fairmont for a 6-2 win in the third place game of the Storm Holiday Classic.
Colby Kuhl denied multiple scoring chances by the Storm in the first period and the teams went into the first intermission scoreless.
Jack Riley put the Storm on the board knocking in a rebound at 3:02 of the second period, Bruns made it 2-0 with a power play goal five minutes later, but Hudson Artz scored a short-handed goal to cut the Cardinals deficit in half after two periods.
The teams traded goals in the third before Bruns took over scoring three goals in the next 11 minutes.
Bruns added an assist for a five-point game, Riley and Kellen Erdahl each tallied a goal and three assists. Chase Engebretson made 31 saves in net and the Storm improve to 3-4-1.
Kuhl stopped 41 shots for Fairmont who fall to 1-12.

PELICAN RAPIDS – West Central Area won the Minnesota National Bank Holiday Classic Tournament with a 81-77 double overtime win over Pelican Rapids on Friday.
The Vikings jumped out to a 16-5 lead to start the game, but the Knights were able to battle back and went into halftime tied at 31. Trailing 62-59 late, the Vikings Nick Schermerhorn nailed a three-pointer to force the first overtime.
The Vikings again found themselves trailing with time running out, this time 69-67 before Okaley Kress scored with 1.2 seconds left to force the second overtime. But the Knights were able to hit 8-10 free throws in the second OT and hung on for the win.
The WCA Knights defeated the hometown Pelican Rapids Vikings 81-77 in double overtime to claim the Minnesota National Bank Holiday Classic Boys Basketball Tournament Championship for the second year in a row.  The Knights won in overtime last year as well vs. Warroad.
Logan Paulson led the Knights with a huge game, scoring 30 while pulling down 20 rebounds. Nathan Kaye finished with 14 points, and Brady Sabolik added 12 with seven assists for the Knights who won last year’s tourney championship in overtime against Warroad. The Knights are now 4-3 while the Vikings fall to 4-4.
