Prep Results: Panthers Edge Storm In Girls Hockey Season Opener 11 Nov 17

MORRIS – The Morris/Benson Area Storm girls hockey team opened up the 2017-18 season on Saturday afternoon at the Lee Community Center, falling to Park Rapids Area 2-1.

After solid goaltending kept the game scoreless thru one period, the Storm struck at 2:10 of period two when Hallie Watzke led a two-on-one breakaway before feeding Kortney Sanasack on a goal. Sanasack went above the glove of Panthers goalie Kylee Pachel to give the Storm a 1-0 lead and her first varsity goal.

The game stayed that way until Lexi Hinckley-Smith struck with just 39 seconds lef in the second. After circling the net she found an opening and fired the puck past the glove hand of Storm goalie Abbey Hoffman to tie the game at one going into the third period.

The game was tied late into the third when Alexa Kennedy took a feed from Taylor Sagen and snuck one under the glove of Hoffman on a power-play at 12:45 of the period to take a 2-1 lead. 

Hoffman earned player of the game with 30 saves in net for the Storm who are 0-1. Pachel stopped 19 shots and the Panthers are 1-0.

Section 6A Meet
MORRIS – The section 6A swimming & diving meet took place at the University of Minnesota-Morris on Saturday, and a day after setting a new school record at the prelims, MACA/Minnewaska/Benson/CGB Gators’ Julia Hoffmann took 11th place in the 100 breaststroke. 

Another school record-setting performance on Friday was by the 400 Free Relay team of Ali Femrite, Hannah Hoffmann, Lacey Entzi, and Michele Stai who took seventh on Saturday.

Other top finishes included Entzi who took fourth in the 100 butterfly and fifth in the 500 free. Entiz qualifies for the state meet in the butterfly event for the fifth consecutive year while setting a new school-record. Femrite took eighth in the 100  butterfly. 

The 200 Medley Relay team of Bailey Schoen, Julia Hoffmann, Erin Edmunds, and Stai took sixth. The 200 free relay team of Stai, Entzi and both Hoffmann girls took fifth.

In team standings the Gators took seventh overall, Sartell-St. Stephens won the event.

Special congratulations to Gators coach Anita Nelson who was named the section 6A Assistant Coach of the Year.
