Section 4 (9-Man) Championship
FARGO – Verndale’s Mack Jones delivered a gutsy performance playing on an injured foot to lead the Pirates past Brandon-Evansville 26-16 in the section 4 (9-Man) championship from the Fargodome on Friday.

Jones threw for two touchdowns while running for two more. He was 9-12 passing for 166 yards, with his favorite target being tight end Craig Orlando who hauled in five catches for 87 yards and a score.

Jones hit Luke Weniger on a 23-yard touchdown to open the scoring in the first quarter, he ran for two short touchdown runs before hitting Orlando on a 34-yard strike and the Pirates defense shutdown the Chargers offense as they took a 26-0 lead late into the fourth quarter.

The Chargers got on the scoreboard when Taylor Bitzan scored on a 10-yard run, Marshall Riedel added a 67-yard touchdown run late and their season ends with a 9-2 record, both losses coming against Verndale.

Bitzan ran for 121 yards on 24 carries and James Strese led the defense with 11 tackles.

The Pirates are now 11-0 and will face Spring Grove at the state quarterfinals on Friday.

 Section 6AA Championship
FARGO – The West Central Area/Ashby Knights pulled the upset of top-seeded Pillager for the section 6AA title at the Fargodome on Friday night, after nearly giving away a 26-point fourth quarter lead.

Ross Anderson led an aerial assault by the Knights that was almost unstoppable, opening the game with a 61-yard touchdown strike to Kaden Spindler on the game’ s first play.

Four minutes later Anderson hit Parker Clavin for a 60-yard touchdown, then Spindler for another 28-yard scoring strike to take a 20-0 lead after one quarter.

The Huskies got on the scoreboard in the second quarter but the Knights responded with two more touchdown passes, both to Brady Sabolik, giving Anderson five in the first half and the Knights a 34-8 halftime lead.

The teams traded scores in the third quarter and the Knights entered the fourth with a 42-16 lead. Dylan Loftis got the Huskies an early quarter touchdown to cut the deficit to 20. But Anderson would march the Knights to the Huskies six-yard line with just under 10 minutes remaining, looking for the knockout blow, only to get picked off in the end zone.

After a 40-yard completion on fourth-and-long to keep their drive alive, the Huskies would get a two-yard touchdown run from Eli Horn making it 42-30.

Pillager than recovered an onside-kick, and on the next play Loftis ran for a 49-yard touchdown, with the two-point conversion cutting the Knights lead to just four with over six minutes remaining.

Anderson again marched the Knights deep into Huskies territory, only to again get picked off in the end zone, giving the Huskies a chance with about 90 seconds remaining.

But the comeback bid ended when Mason Nibbe hit quarterback Josh Doss, causing a fumble which the Knights recovered to secure the win.

Anderson was 20-29 for 415 yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions. Spindler had 10 catches for 200 yards with three touchdowns and the Knights who are 7-4 now face Moose Lake-Willow River at Brainerd high school on Friday, Nov. 10th at 7:00 for the class 2A state quarterfinals.

Loftis ran for 204 yards and three touchdowns on 37 carries for the Huskies who end the season at 8-3.
