Area Scoreboard: Monson Motors Wins Softball Title, Legion Playoff Action 13 Jul 17

Glenwood/Lowry 11, Brandon-Evansville 0 / 5 inn
GLENWOOD – Glenwood/Lowry’s quest to defend their District 7 title began with a 10-run first inning and they cruised to an 11-0 win in five innings over Brandon-Evansville on Thursday in the Northwest Sub-District 7 playoffs from Marthaler Field.

Glenwood/Lowry had ten batters reach base safely before an out was recorded with seven collecting at least one RBI. That was more than enough support for Colin Richards who tossed five shutout innings, giving up three hits while issuing just one walk and striking out nine for the win.

Richards was 2-3 at the plate with two RBI’s and a run scored, Matt Gruber and Colin Weidauer each had two hits.

Trey Bosek settled in after a rough first inning, but took the loss allowing 11 runs on nine hits, walking two and striking out four. Kevin Campbell had two of the Post 188′s three hits.

Wheaton 10, Hancock 3
WHEATON - Two big innings helped the Wheaton Bandits top Hancock 10-3 in other legion playoff action on Thursday from Wheaton.

The Bandits opened the game with a four-run first inning, and Lukas Adelman kept the Post 29 bats quiet tossing three one-hit innings while striking out three.

Hancock broke through in the fifth though off reliever Sam Adelman when Michael Milander’s two-run triple highlighted a three-run inning, cutting the deficit to one. The Bandits would respond with a six-run bottom half and Adelman along with Eric Schwagel would keep Hancock off the scoreboard the rest of the way.

Lukas Adelman earned the win on the hill while going 2-4 with a double, triple, and run scored. Matt Thielen drove in three runs and scored once going 3-3, Sam Adelman was 3-4 with a pair of RBI’s with a run.

Chandler Gramm took the loss for Hancock, allowing four runs on five hits over two innings, Milander and Collin Brown went the rest of the way. Milander finished 2-3 at the plate with a double, triple, two RBI’s and a run scored.

All four sub-district 7 teams will now go to Marthaler Field at Minnewaska High School on Saturday with Wheaton facing Glenwood/Lowry at 10:30 in the winner’s bracket. Hancock will face Brandon-Evansville in an elimination game at 1:00.

Starbuck 10, Morris 1
STARBUCK – The Starbuck Junior Legion baseball team bookended the ballgame with a pair of four-run innings for a 10-1 win over Morris on Saturday at the Starbuck tournament. Post 5039′s lone run was unearned in the bottom of the fourth when they were already trailing 6-0.

Jaret Johnson and Jack Riley each had two hits. Johnson took the loss on the hill tossing four innings, allowing six runs (one earned) on just two hits. Johnson was hurt by issuing seven walks, and seven errors committed behind him.

Jordan Leuthdardt threw the final three innings for Morris. 

Paynesville 12, Morris 2
STARBUCK – Paynesville broke open a close game with a six-run fourth inning on their way to a 12-2 win over Morris at the Starbuck tourney.

Morris was held to just two hits as a team, one each by Jaret Johnson and Colten Sheldorf. Kevin Asfeld took the loss, allowing 12 runs (nine earned) on eight hits over four innings. 

Hutchinson 2, Morris 0
STARBUCK – Hutchinson survived a pitcher’s duel with a 2-0 win over Morris on the final day of the Starbuck tourney Sunday.

Kevin Asfeld picked up two of the 5039′s three hits with Colten Sheldorf getting saddled with the loss. Sheldorf threw six innings and allowed two runs on four hits, walking four and striking out five.

With the three losses, Morris is now 6-6-1 on the season.

Monson Motors 4, Riverview 3
MORRIS – Monson Motors erased a three-run deficit by scoring four runs in the fourth, and would hold on for a 4-3 win over Riverview in the Elementary Fastpitch Softball championship from Wells South in Morris on Thursday night.

Monson’s Rachel Steen’s RBI single was followed by a two-run double from Sadie Vipond to tie the game at three. Chloe Cardwell then drove in the winner with an RBI single. 

Riverview’s runs came from and RBI doubles by Jordyn Perry and Anna Bright, Cate Kehoe had an RBI single.
