Big Sixth Inning Backs Campbell, As Chargers Win Season Opener 03 Apr 17

CLINTON – Brandon-Evansville erupted for six runs in the sixth inning to earn an 8-4 win over Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley in the baseball season opener on Monday.

Tanner Bitzan broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning with RBI ground out to score Kevin Campbell. The Chargers then collected five hits and took advantage of four Wolverine errors in the sixth inning to blow the game open 7-0. Nick Thorstad highlighted the inning with a two-run double.

Nate Moberg got the Wolverines on the board with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning, only to have the Chargers answer with another in the seventh. CGB made one last push in their final at-bat scoring three unearned runs off Thorstad in relief of Campbell, but the comeback fell short and Chargers held on for the win.



Campbell threw six dominant innings to earn the win, allowing one run while scattering five hits, with a walk and six strikeouts. He was also 2-4 at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored to earn player of the game.

Luke Adelman took loss, going 5.2 innings, giving up seven runs (three earned) on seven hits, walking one and striking out eight. Austin Kipp went 2-4 with an RBI for the Wolverines.

West Central Area 14, Breckenridge 9
BRECKENRIDGE – The West Central Area Knights improved to 2-0 on the season with a 14-9 win over the Breckenridge Cowgirls on Monday. Kaitlyn Sanstead collected four hits including a single, two doubles and a triple, while sister Morgan added two doubles with a single. Hailey Hansen had three hits and Brianna Kreft tossed six innings allowing one run on three hits, striking out nine.
