Two Hancock students were presented with the ExCEL award during the girls’ state basketball tournament this weekend.
Juniors Emma Nelson and Mason Schmidgall were recognized for their leadership qualities, participation in school activities, and voluntary work in the community.
Nelson is involved in the FFA, volleyball, basketball, track, band, choir, and 4-H. She also volunteers through Adopt a Highway, and is a county ambassador, state fair committee youth representative, church volunteer, county fair volunteer, and ag in the classroom program volunteer.
Schmidgall participates in Knowledge Bowl, student council, FFA, Business Professional of America, football, basketball, track, speech, band, theater, choir, and marching band. He volunteers through his church, Feed My Starving Children, blood drives, a technology blod, the food shelf, corn drives, school technology and maintenance, community cleanup, and is a youth sports referee.
The ExCEL award recognized Excellence in Community, Education and Leadership and is in its 21st year of being sponsored by the Minnesota State High School League.
