MOORHEAD – The Ada-Borup Cougars got their revenge on Wheaton/Herman-Norcross with a 50-44 win in the girls section 6A championship on Friday night at Concordia College in Moorhead.
A year after the Warriors won a thriller to earn a trip to the state tournament, the Cougars got the Warriors the second time around with a late push in the second half.
The Warriors led by as many as eight in the first half, but the Cougars came charging back with defense, and turned a late steal into a transition bucket at the buzzer to cut the Warriors lead to just one going into halftime.
In the second half the team’s battled to a 39-39 tie with 3:45 left. From there the Cougars locked down defensively while getting timely buckets and converting their free throws, using a 9-2 run to take control of the action, and sealing the win with free throws.
After struggling to take care of the ball early, the Cougars turned the tables on the Warriors by forcing 14 turnovers, while reducing their own. The biggest factor of the night was Ada-Borup’s ability to keep the ball out of the low-post and in the hands of Briona Edwards.
Mariah McKeever was key to the Cougars offense with 14 points, as she went 9-10 from the line. Maddie Smart added 14 off the bench and the Cougars improve to 28-1 on the season, with their lone loss coming in the season opener.
The Warriors got 19 from Edwards and 11 from Anna Rinke as their season ends by suffering their first loss, at 29-1.
