Tigers Win Sub-Section Title, One Away From State Tournament Berth 11 Mar 17

Featured Game of the Day
MARSHALL – Big performances by a pair of sophomores have the Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta Tigers one win away from a state tournament berth after defeating New London-Spicer 68-62 in the section 3AA-North final on Saturday afternoon at Southwest MN St. in Marshall.

In a game that featured six ties and 12 lead changes, it was the sophomores that shined as the Tigers duo of Camden Arndt and Jaret Johnson combined for 39 points, and Wildcats sophomore Brandon Adelman finished with a game-high 24 points.

The Tigers shot a blistering 59 percent from the floor in the first half to take a 35-28 lead into halftime.

A trend that developed in the first half was both teams using spurts to grab the lead, only to have the other answer with one of their own. That trend continued into the second half.

With the Tigers holding their biggest lead of the day at 41-31, the Wildcats went on a 14-2 run to take the lead, it then switched hands on each of the next four possessions until the Tigers, trailing 51-50, went on an 8-0 run to take the lead for good.

From there the Tigers kept the Wildcats at an arm’s length with free throw shooting. Adelman would fire a last second three pointer that was off the mark, Johnson grabbed the rebound and held the ball until the final buzzer sounded, and the Tigers celebrated their first sub-section title since 2004, which was also the last time they made a state tournament appearance.

Johnson led the Tigers with 20 points on 9-12 shooting, Arndt finished with 19 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Jacob Zosel had eight points and nine assists, Tim Travis scored eight, and Lukus Manska added seven. Tigers shot 27-53 for 51 percent on the day and improve to 16-12 on the year. They will now face the south sub-section and defending section champs in Jackson County Central (25-4) on Thursday at 5:00 in Marshall.

Aside from Adelman’s 24, Mitchell Halvorson finished with 16 for the Wildcats who shot 20-43 (47%) on the day, finish the season 16-12.
