Zosel’s Buzzer Beater In Overtime Puts Tigers Into Sub-Section Finals 09 Mar 17

WILLMAR – Jacob Zosel kept the Tigers season alive with a game-tying three-pointer late in regulation, then extended it by hitting the game-winner at the buzzer in overtime to lift Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta to a 68-66 win over Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City in the section 3AA-North semifinals on Thursday night in Willmar. 

With the Tigers trailing 58-55 in the closing seconds of regulation, Jaret Johnson passed to Zosel who got open on the wing and knocked down a three with just 7.8 seconds remaining to tie the game at 58. The Falcons had a chance to win it when they got the ball in the hands of Payton Kinzler who had connected on four three-pointers already in the game, when his potential game-winner rattled in-and-out at the buzzer to send the game into overtime.

In overtime the Tigers quickly took a four point lead and never trailed in the extra session, but found themselves tied at 66 after Kinzler hit an off-balance three with six seconds remaining. Zosel then took the ball off the inbound the length of the floor, drove to his left on the baseline and sunk a right-handed floater off the backboard as time expired sending the Tiger crowd into a frenzy, and the Tigers onto the sub-section finals on Saturday.

The Tigers overcame a slow start when they opened the game shooting just 2-17 from the floor, by turning 12 first half turnovers by the Falcons into points, and took a four-point lead into halftime. 

In the second half the Tigers led by as many eight, but an 8-0 run by the Falcons with put them right back in it, and the final eight minutes of the half and overtime was a constant back and forth affair. The game featured nine ties and five lead changes.

Zosel earned player of the game with 15 points, Camden Arndt had 13 points with seven rebounds, Lukus Manska had 12 with four steals, Tate Nelson and Jaret Johnson added nine points each. The Tigers are now 15-12 on the season, 5-0 in overtime games, and will face New London-Spicer in the 3AA-North sub-section final on Saturday at Southwest MN St. in Marshall, tip-off at 2:30 on 1230 KMRS.

After a scoreless first half, Gabe Eisenbacher finished with 18 points and 15 rebounds, Kinzler had 17 points, Erik Belgum tallied 11 points with nine rebounds and six assists, while Adam Johnson added 11 points and nine boards. The Falcons end the season with a record of 15-11.

Hancock 71, Brandon-Evansville 58
HANCOCK – The Hancock Owls shot 71 percent from the floor to earn a 71-58 win over Brandon-Evansville in the section 6A-South quarterfinals on Thursday in Hancock. Noah Kannegiesser led the Owls with 31 points and four assists, Tyler Reese chipped in with 18 points, and Chandler Gramm had eight points eight rebounds. The Owls are now 18-6 and move onto the sub-section semifinals on Saturday where they meet top-seed Ortonville at 1:00 on the University of Minnesota-Morris campus, game can be heard on 95.7 KKOK. James Strese and Darrin Wibstad led the Chargers with 12 points each, Jake Hintermeister finished with 11 as they end the season with a record of 15-11.

Ortonville 75, Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley 56
ORTONVILLE – Lukas Adelman had 16 points and eight rebounds but saw his historic high school basketball career end when Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley suffered a 75-56 loss to top-seeded Ortonville on Thursday. Hunter Turner and Caleb Cardwell both finished with 11 points and Sam Adelman added 10 for the Wolverines who end the season 8-19. The Trojans are now 20-5.

Battle Lake 62, West Central Area 44
BATTLE LAKE – Eric Van Erp had 28 points to lead Battle Lake past West Central Area 62-44. The Battlers shot 51 percent on the night with Isaiah Dorn adding 15 points, they’re now 20-5. Brady Sabolik had 13 points and Logan Paulson added nine with nine rebounds for the Knights who’s season ends with a mark of 11-15.
