Jeff Backer, Jr. has announced his candidacy for the Minnesota House of Representatives, running in District 12A. The District, currently represented by Elbow Lake Democrat Jay McNamar, includes all of Stevens, Big Stone, Grant, Traverse, and Wilkin Counties and portions of Pope and Douglas Counties.
Backer is running as a Republican with a history of public service in his hometown of Browns Valley. Backer was elected in 2000 to serve on the Browns Valley City Council. He was elected Browns Valley Mayor in 2004 and served in that capacity for three terms. Backer says of his time in city government, “During that time we found ways to keep taxes down, combine services and worked extremely hard to cut costs.”
Backer and his brother, Jay, co-own BW, Incorporated. in Browns Valley, a catalog business. Backer has served as a volunteer EMT for the Browns Valley Ambulance and has been active with the Lions, Minnesota Board of Peace Officers, and as a church volunteer.
Backer has previously been a candidate for office. In 2010, Backer sought the Republican endorsement in the then-Minnesota Senate District 9.
Backer is the second declared candidate for the Republican nomination in District 12A. Morris-based business owner Nancy Taffe announced her planned run in December, 2013.
