A Starbuck woman is facing a charge of murder in the second degree following the February death of a four-year old boy in her care. Thirty-one year old Amanda Peltier has been charged with unintentional murder for the February 28th death of the boy.
The child was the son of her fiance and the two adults lived in a house together with six children. The charges allege Peltier unlawfully caused the death of a human being “while committing or attempting to commit malicious punishment of a child resulting in great bodily harm.”
Following the child’s death in February, Peltier was interviewed by an agent of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and admitted to hitting and biting the child. She told the agent the morning before the child’s death she had become upset with the child and “‘launched’ him across the room.” After the boy had reportedly been throwing up for several hours and then become unresponsive, Peltier and the boy’s father called 911. The boy was transported to the St. Cloud Hospital were he died.
The Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office concluded the boy’s injuries and death were consistent with homicide. The examiner’s final report was received June 3 and Pope County Attorney Neil Nelson filed charges on July 25. Peltier made her first court appearance on July 26 and was booked into the Douglas County Jail.
